Parents and teachers have been warned against subjecting learners to holiday tuition.

Early Learning and Basic Education PS Julius Jwan said that the government allocated sufficient time for learning in each term, making holiday tuition unnecessary.

“Let children enjoy their holiday, let them be with their parents so that when we open schools, they will be ready to start a very intensive program,” Jwan said.

He warned that those who will defy the directive will be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Holiday tuition was banned in Kenyan schools but some parents make private arrangements with teachers for their children to undergo remedial studies.

The extra learning is meant to assist learners to achieve expected competencies in core academic skills such as literacy and numeracy.

Schools closed on March 4 and learners will remain on holiday for close to two months before they reopen on April 25 for the first term of the 2021-2022 calendar year.

The long holiday may tempt some parents to send their children for holiday tuition in an effort to help them remember what they learnt the previous term.

Jwan, however, said the government allocated sufficient time for learning in each term, making holiday tuition unnecessary.

Once learners resume on April 25 for the first term, studies will run for 10 weeks until July 1.

Term two will run for another ten weeks between July 11 and September 16. Term three will run for nine weeks from September 26 to November 25.

Jwan warned that parents and schools that will engage children in tuition learning during the holiday will be prosecuted.

He made the remarks on Wednesday at Kambi Moto in Rongai sub-county after witnessing the opening of examination containers at the Deputy County Commissioner’s office.
