International Women's Day celebration in Mombasa was disrupted on Tuesday, as supporters of rival politicians clashed.

The celebrations were ongoing at the Tononoka Grounds when supporters of Suleiman Shahbal and Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir clashed.

The two have been facing off at various events as they seek to succeed Governor Hassan Joho.

They are both seeking the ODM ticket.

The event was momentarily disrupted for about two hours.

Police from the nearby Tononoka Police Station had to be called in to stop the chaos from escalating further.

The event was organised by the Mombasa County Department of Gender, Youth and Sports.

Mombasa woman representative Asha Hussein, Shahbal's wife Rahma, Kisauni MP aspirant Beatrice Gambo, among others attended the event.

Gambo said it was unfortunate that the youth are being used to disrupt an event meant for women.

“Youth and, especially our sons, must not be used to cause chaos during this political season,” she said.

She said women should also not be used to settle political scores.

Mombasa Woman representative also called out the youth for being used to cause political violence.

The event has continued amid tension and under tight security from the police.
