• Wanjigi has until Wednesday to surrender a cache of firearms and bullets in his possession

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has ordered businessman Jimi Wanjigi to surrender 10 firearms and over 400 bullets he owns.
Wanjigi has until Wednesday to surrender a cache of firearms and bullets in his possession.
The DCI told Wanjigi to surrender the 10 firearms and ammunition within 72 hours or face prosecution for illegal possession.
In a letter to the businessman dated February 21, the DCI said they knew of the weapons on January 17, 2022, while at his Kwacha offices in Westlands while conducting an investigation on a land matter in which he is a person of interest.
" The criminal investigation has established that you hold 10 firearms of different makes and descriptions which act of possession is in contravention of the law," the letter reads in part.
The DCI says Wanjigi has no certificate authorising him to own such weapons.
It is on that backdrop that he has been ordered to hand over the firearms.
"The Directorate has a duty to detect, disrupt and investigate any intelligence or information either on the complaint or of its own volition.
"You are required to surrender the firearms and ammunition held by yourself as you do not hold any firearm certificate," the letter states.
Wanjigi is also faulted for failing to attend vetting for ownership of firearms despite interior CS Fred Matinag'i issuing a mandatory moratorium on the same in 2018.
DCI in the same statement revealed that the tycoon has hired a former GSU officer who is illegally armed to protect him and his premises.
The State added that the illegal arming of the ex-GSU officer is an indicator that many other people allied to him could also be illegally armed for ulterior motives.
