Mombasa High Court Judge John Mativo on Friday conducted verification of 82 containers detained by KRA following suspicion that the shipment is subject to a criminal investigation.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation, the containers are suspected to aid in various offences including financing terrorism.

The DCI advised the KRA to probe the shipment containers on suspicion of irregular importation, concealment and misdeclaration.

The 82 forty-foot containers which were declared as black tea from Iran and Vietnam, was imported into the country by Cup of Joe Limited between April and June 2021.

According to the taxman, the company has sought judicial review of KRA’s decision not to release the containers.

The verification of the containers took place at the Regional Logistics Container Freight Station (CFS), Miritini.
