The Mount Kenya Foundation has finally settled on ODM leader Raila Odinga as its preferred presidential candidate in the 2022 General Elections.

A source privy to the details revealed to the Star that MKF is set to hold a leaders meeting on Wednesday to endorse the decision.

They will then announce the ODM leader as their candidate, ahead of the Azimio la Umoja Convention set for Friday, at the Kasarani stadium.

MKF is an elite club of billionaire businessmen from President Uhuru Kenyatta’s backyard.

In September, the elite group said it had been tasked by the President to present a name of a possible candidate to take over from him when he retires next year.

"The President asked us to advise him on what type of person he should hand the mantle to," MKF vice-chairman Titus Ibui said.

MKF is led by Peter Munga who is its chairman.

National Assembly deputy Majority Chief Whip, Maoka Maore confirmed to the Star that the foundation has settled on the former Prime Minister, and the unveiling will be on Wednesday.

"I can confirm both," he told the Star on phone.

The MKF big announcement comes just a day to the Azimio la Umoja Convention, where Raila is expected to make official his bid for the country top seat.

This will be the ODM leader's fifth stab at the presidency.

The group met Raila in September as they began their search for a substantive replacement for President Uhuru Kenyatta.

They also met  Oka chiefs Musalia Mudavadi (ANC), Kalonzo Musyoka (Wiper), Gideon Moi (Kanu), Moses Wetang'ula(Ford Kenya) and Cyrus Jirongo of UDP in October.

Mt Kenya Foundation backed Uhuru and his predecessor Mwai Kibaki in past elections.
