RIGATHI GACHAGUA: More youths must get IDs, register to vote

IEBC has done well so far, it must ensure no potential voter is left out

In Summary
  • The current team led by Wafula Chebukati has not demonstrated in any way that it is incapable of delivering a foolproof election.
  • Treasury must swiftly give the commission the financial support it needs to carry out effective mass voter registration. And more IDs must be issued.

The electoral commission must be given what it requires by law to execute its constitutional mandate.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission is an important trustee of the country's democracy and must be supported by all to guarantee free, fair, credible and verifiable elections.

The current team led by Wafula Chebukati has not demonstrated in any way that it is incapable of delivering a foolproof election next year.

The commission delivered in the 2013 and 2017 elections. It still has the wherewithal to guarantee the country that the next elections will be as credible as possible.

I believe that the commission has done well in preparing for next year's polls. I hope that there is still time left to put everything in order.

For now, what I want to urge the commission is to focus on ensuring that no Kenyan of voting age is disfranchised next year.

The commission must firmly ensure that the youth who are yet to register as voters are brought on board.

The commission must also enhance access to information so that it builds public confidence ahead of next year's elections.

The more Kenyans see the commission as open and accountable to the public, the more confidence they will have in its systems and infrastructure.

Just let the commission do the right thing and stick to the law all the time, irrespective of the consequences.

The National Treasury must move with speed and give the commission the financial support it needs to carry out effective mass voter registration.

The commission must be facilitated as soon as possible so that no Kenyans are left out in exercising their democratic right.

At the same time, the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of the National Government should scale up the issuance of National Identification Cards to young people.

As politicians, we are concerned that currently no IDs are being issued across the country.

This is a major worry and we ask the authorities to urgently roll out targeted ID issuance programmes in all parts of the country.

Otherwise, many Kenyans of voting age will be left out of the 2022 elections.
