Nakuru doctor James Gakara, suspected of killing his two children last Saturday, has died while receiving treatment at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital.

Confirming the death, Gakara's brother and family spokesperson Burton Njoroge said the doctor died on Wednesday morning.

His widow, Winnie Odhiambo, is admitted at Nakuru Level 5 Hospital's HDU after she collapsed upon learning of her husband's death.

“The doctors tried all they could to try and stabilise his sugar levels which had gone significantly low. He lost the battle this morning at 9am,” Njoroge said.

He denied claims that Gakara was not in good terms with his wife and gave a chronology of the events of Saturday.

According to Njoroge, he had supper with Gakara’s family and no one showed signs of strain or talked about disagreements.

“He loved his family so much. He had planned for his wife to go back to school to further her studies at JKUAT so that he can help him to run his clinics and actually she went to register for the course,” Njoroge said.

Odhiambo, who is a clinician at a Nakuru hospital, wanted to further her education.

“Gakara through text messages had communicated with Winnie asking her whether he could take the children out, She had replied and even suggested a good place to take them,” Njoroge said.

Odhiambo was in Nairobi.

However Odhiambo became concerned when clients from the hospital started calling her asking the whereabouts of the doctor because he had switched off his phone.

She called one of the staffers from the hospital to go to the home and upon arrival found Gakara's car and that of the wife parked, but no one was answering the doorbell.

The worker peeped through the door and spotted the doctor's spectacles.

This made Odhiambo suspect that all was not well as he could not see without them.

“It is then with the help of the police that we were able to break into the house and we found the children dead and Gakara was lying unconscious, he was taken into the ICU,” Njoroge said.

Odhiambo’s sister has also refuted claims that she wanted to go abroad for further studies saying, she does not even have a passport and all they had planned is for her to go to JKUAT.

Gakara had been in the ICU since Saturday under police watch after he allegedly tried to commit suicide.

The obstetrician-gynaecologist and proprietor of Optimum Current Hospital, Nakuru, was suspected of killing his two children aged three and five, before attempting suicide according to police reports.

According to the police report the bodies of the two minors were found  at their Milimani apartment in Nakuru.
