ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi has denied reports that he is courting Kirinyaga Governor, Anne Waiguru to be his running mate.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mudavadi insisted that his party is not courting anyone for the position.

“We are not courting any specific person for the running mate. We are looking at it openly and that was Savula in his peak of excitement he made his comments,” he said on Citizen TV.

“I asked him and he said they were personal statements although he may have made some reference to the ANC. No such commitment has been made.”

The former vice president was responding to remarks by his ANC deputy party leader Ayub Savula, who claimed that the party was courting Waiguru to be one of their Kingpins from Mt Kenya region.

He made the remarks on September 9, when he accompanied the Kirinyaga governor to the EACC after she had been summoned.

“We know it is because of politics. We know that in Central it is very difficult to sell a certain political party and a certain individual who is contesting for the presidency. As ANC, we are going to stand in solidarity with her and we are courting her to be one of our political kingpins in Central Kenya,” Savula said.

The MP’s remarks came a few days after Mudavadi in an interview said that it is likely that he would choose a running mate from the Mt Kenya region.

The ANC leader said Mt Kenya people are experienced politically given the number of times they have produced presidents for our country.

“There’s a lot of experience in the region. They are people who love doing business and can contribute a lot to the economy and the nation. So, I’m not saying no, there’s a possibility,” Mudavadi said.

Asked about what he will be looking for in a running mate, the former VP said, “You’d be looking for integrity. You’ll be looking for an individual whom you can work with. You cannot have a situation where the president and his deputy are working at crossroads.”
