The office of Deputy President William Ruto has officially written to Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai seeking an explanation for the withdrawal of General Service Unit officers from his Karen residence.

In a letter dated August 26, Ruto’s Chief of Staff Ken Osinde said that there has been no explanation regarding the matter.

On Thursday at 2pm, Administration Police Service officers took over guard at Ruto's residences following the withdrawal of the elite GSU.

The same was witnessed in DP’s rural home in Sugoi, Uasin Gishu as APS' Security of Government Buildings Unit took over the residence at Elgon View, Eldoret.

Osinde said that the decision was made contrary to the Police Service Standing Orders Chapter 8 Section 5 (e).

 Chapter 8 Section 5 (e) states that the GSU commandant shall be responsible for the security of the president, the Deputy President, and the State Houses and Lodges.

Osinde has said that on numerous occasions, some prominent politicians and leaders have publicly stated that Ruto will not be on the ballot come the 2022 elections.

“You have refused to act upon reports made to you on the implications of such remarks for the security, safety, and well-being of the Deputy President,” Osinde said.

He added that the report regarding the meeting that was held in Hotel La Mada has not been investigated up to date.

Also, Ruto’s office has decried the refusal to engage the DP on matters touching on the security in the country for the last three years.

Some of the demands made to Mutyambai include;

  • The reasons for the withdrawal of the GSU mandated by the law to guard the DP’s residence.
  • The connection between the withdrawal of the GSU and the public statements of various persons declaring that Ruto will not be there in 2022.
  • Instructions that the GSU at the DP’s residence declined to carry out warranted their removal.
  • Clearance on whether suspicious persons in AP uniform have been deployed to the DP with orders to facilitate sinister schemes against the DP.

The office has also demanded the reinstatement of the GSU officers continue with their duties as stated by the law.

Mutyambai has also been informed that he will be held accountable in case any harm befalls to the DP or any member of his family.
