There have been posts circulating through social media, saying that the order issued regarding the 60-day curfew extension ended at midnight on July 27.

A post by a parody Kenya Police Twitter account said the curfew period would elapse as President Uhuru Kenyatta is still in the United Kingdom for a three-day official visit.

The post purported that curfew came to an end on the midnight of July 27, 2021.

An order was issued on May 28 by Interior CS Fred Matiang’i saying, "This Order shall apply during the hours of darkness between ten o’clock in the evening and four o’clock in the morning with effect from the 28 of May 2021 and shall remain in effect for a period of sixty days thereof."

The post on social media is misleading, since the president had made an address on June 29, 2021 regarding Covid hot spots and the rest of the country.

In his address, the president said that the rest of the country of the territory of the Republic of Kenya shall continue to observe 10pm to 4am curfew for a period of 60 days, while the thirteen zoned counties will observe dusk to dawn curfew from 7pm-4am for one month.

Uhuru had also said that the prohibition against political gatherings and all public gatherings is extended for a further 60 days.

Government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna told the Star that official communication would have been issued regarding the matter.

And even if the president was absent at the time when the order expires, the Interior CS will exercise the powers conferred to him by section 8(1) of the Public Order Act, and issue a statement about it.

Therefore, the post that curfew ends with the absence of the president is false.

Kenyans across the country will therefore continue observing the curfew hours for the next one month, until August 29.

As it stands, the country is yet to be out of the wood from the threat of coronavirus.

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Health reported 976 new cases of the virus, pushing the total confirmed positive cases to 198,935.

Also, MoH said that 10 patients succumbed to the disease, totaling the cumulative fatalities to 3,882.
