Three traffic police officers who were caught on camera allegedly taking bribes from public service vehicles along Kangundo Road, Nairobi have been identified.

They were summoned by the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) Monday, July 26 for formal disciplinary measures.

IAU director Mohamed Amin said the three will be disciplined internally and later be informed on the way forward.

“We have identified them and have been summoned for formal disciplinary measures,” he said.

This may include their transfer or even demotion.

The officers based at Buruburu police station were on duty on an unknown date when a cameraman who had apparently monitored their activities captured them taking what is thought to be bribes from a man who collected them from various matatus.

Amin said the Inspector General of Police Hilary Mutyambai had ordered the move to probe and discipline them accordingly.

As part of efforts to strengthen the unit’s operations, IAU has been allowed to establish and devolve its services to conduct investigations into police misconduct in a fair and effective manner and report directly to the Inspector General.

The unit is mandated to among others deal with cases of indiscipline, including corruption, police misconduct within the police service either raised by an officer or members of the public.

Cases of bribe-taking among traffic personnel are not new.

They are common and this has been attributed to among others to poor pay and lack of discipline among those concerned.

Meanwhile, a police officer is expected in court for obtaining Sh2.5 million from his senior on the pretext he would help him import a lorry.

The officer was arrested after the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions gave consent to the move following an investigation.

Constable Elijah Gichohi was at the weekend arrested and held at Kayole police cells ahead of his arraignment.

This follows a complaint by a senior officer that he had given him the money to facilitate his importation of a Toyota Landcruiser.
