A Labour court has stopped the recruitment and appointment of a new CEO for the Law Society of Kenya.

Justice Maureen Onyango issued an order preserving the position of Mercy Wamua as the society's chief executive officer pending hearing of a case filed in court.

Wambua filed the application saying LSK president Nelson Havi invited applicants for interviews to fill in the position of CEO of the Law Society of Kenya and secretary to the council of the society on July 23.

The applications were invited through a publication in the local dailies.

She said Havi proceeded to call for applications despite court orders issued in December last year that barred the LSK boss from interfering with Wambua's incumbency as CEO.

Wambua argued that the court has a duty to protect its orders and facilitate its enforcement. Failing to do so threatens the administration of justice and the rule of law, she said.

“I am apprehensive that unless retrained by the court, the interviews scheduled for today would proceed as planned, resulting in appointment of CEO of the LSK and secretary to the council of the society,” Wambua said.

Justice Onyango certified the matter as urgent and directed it be heard on July 29 before Justice James Rika.
