Inspector General Hillary Mutyambai has mourned the death of former police commissioner Duncan Wachira.

Wachira died on Wednesday at his Nairobi home.

"As we mourn him, we're reminded of a man who gave his best to the service of the nation through his career which spanned for 29 years, from 1969 as a Cadet Inspector to 1998, rising to the highest rank in the then Kenya Police Force," Mutyambai said.

The IG added that he will be remembered for his strict discipline and deep professionalism in handling policing matters and for steering the Kenya Police Force to the great heights of development during his tenure.

"He was a man gifted with a powerful mind, driving energy and a strong personality which earned him nick name 'strong man' across the police, holding unflinching views about what needed to be done and leading from the front.

"On my own behalf and that of the entire National Police Service fraternity, I take this opportunity to pass our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends and relatives of the late Mr Duncan Wachira," Mutyambai said.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also condoled with to the family, relatives, and friends of Wachira.

In his message of comfort on Wednesday, Uhuru remembered the former police boss as a true servant of the nation and a patriot who was committed to the well being of the country.

“I have known Wachira as a man of great insight and unique qualities. During his time as the head of our police service, he pioneered reforms that improved the welfare of our men and women in uniform," Uhuru said.

"Wachira is also remembered for his no-nonsense approach to the fight against crime especially in Nairobi."
