The Inspector-General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has called on Kenyans to avoid giving money to police officers in exchange for their services.

The IG held his first social media interaction with Kenyans through Twitter on Monday.

Kenyans had earlier alleged that the IG went silent since the virus hit the nation in March with cases of police brutality increasing.

During the interaction, a complainant by the name Jr Munyoki said that the police officers are demanding money to give victims of accidents their abstracts and P3 forms.

The complainant added that some officers are demanding up to Sh5,000.

Mutyambai directed the victim to report the cases to the Internal Affairs Unit for a follow-up.

The IG has also encouraged the public to continue reporting cases of police brutality.

"We encourage all citizens to keep reporting cases of police brutality. I’m aware some of these cases occur at night and others in remote parts of Kenya. Forward the videos to us," Mutyambai said.

He added that reforming the security service depends on Kenyans who can achieve it by exposing the errant officers.

Mutyambai added that the project which he had initiated to ensure those police officers have body cams and dashcams is in progress.

"Having body cams is progressive. We’re set to adopt it once we have sufficient resources," the IG said.

He said all the complaints and concerns raised during the interaction will be addressed.

Several cases of police brutality including deaths have been reported across the country since the dusk-dawn curfew order was imposed.
