Media Council of Kenya wants the suspension of all live coverage as a measure to tame the spread of coronavirus.

Kenya has so far confirmed seven cases even as global deaths hit 7,000.

Earlier in the week, President Uhuru Kenyatta asked Kenyans to maintain social distancing in a bid to fight the spread of the virus.

"...this is particularly critical in preventing the congregation of a large number of journalists and media practitioners in one location,"CEO David Omwoyo said.

In a statement on Thursday, Omwoyo asked the government to facilitate the provision of live feeds to national and community-level media houses.

"We encourage media houses to cooperate with such arrangements for their safety in view of the risk of infections from crowded areas," he said.

Omwoyo said that media houses should be provided with protective gear as they cover the spread of the virus on the ground.

"The Media Sector Emergency Response Team will avail the list of such media personnel to the national government and continually liaise with its appointed officers to ensure their safety."

The government is expected to announce new measures aimed at stopping further spread of the COVID-19 in Kenya.
