Ex-Nairobi county official fined Sh530,000 in bribery case

A former Nairobi county official was on Monday fined Sh530,000 by an anti-corruption court for taking a bribe.

Robert Kiriago took the monies to facilitate the withdrawal of a case which was pending before the Nairobi city court.

The former head of environmental operation was arrested while receiving Sh90,000 being part of Sh140,000 bribe he had sought.

This was to be as an inducement to allow the complainant continue with excavation work at Karen without an approval letter.

"He was found guilty of two counts of corruption namely soliciting and receiving of a benefit," EACC said in a statement on Monday.

The case facing the official stated that on October 10, 2016.

This was after EACC received a complaint over the Sh140,000 bribe.

On the first count of soliciting for Sh140,000, he was fined sh100,000 and in default, to serve one-year jail term.

On count two of receiving of a benefit of Sh90,000, Kiriago was fined Sh250,000 and in default, to serve one year in prison.

"He was slapped with a further mandatory fine of Sh180,000, being double the Sh90,000 he received corruptly," the statement reads.

Elsewhere, two traffic cops are arrested with Sh3,000, believed to be bribes, in Makueni county on Sunday.

This followed complaints that the officers, who were using a Probox, were collecting bribes in Wote.

"The detectives undertook an operation and arrested Bernard Kamau and Paul Bolei. They were found with over Sh 3,000."

EACC said the two will be taken to court in the coming days.
