Coast regional commissioner Bernard Leparmarai has warned junior police officers against harassing residents.

The commissioner told them on Thursday to establish good working relationships with communities for the sake of peace and stability.

"You cannot harass people and claim to be working. Police work does not involve extorting money or beating up people," he said during a peace forum at Kinondo.

Leparmarai called for the formation of a new community policing team to tackle insecurity in Kwale.

The administrator also urged the public to exercise patience and follow the right procedures when police are accused of violating the law.

Cases of insecurity in Kwale have been on the rise especially in Ukunda.

Armed robbers have robbed at least M-Pesa operators this week.

Residents blame police for failing to respond in time whenever they report attacks.

But Kwale county commissioner Karuku Ngumo rubbished the reports saying they respond quickly. The commissioner said failure by residents to share information with police has resulted in the rise in crime.

Ngumo also said police have stepped up efforts to fight insecurity and that they had taken steps to ensure illegal guns are recovered.
