Nairobi has banned boda boda operators from ferrying people to and from the city centre.

A notice from governor Mike Sonko's office stated on Tuesday that the regulation was effective immediately.

"Any operator and passenger found contravening this law will be arrested for an offence punishable by hefty fines and long jail terms as provided for in the Traffic Act, 2014."

The notice states the county has not assigned parking lots in the central business district.

Motorcycle riders who transport goods are exempt.

Peter Mbaya, a senior inspector at City Hall, termed the boda boda operators rogue and noted they do not respect traffic rules.

Mbaya added that many cases have been reported of criminals' use of motorcycles to flee after crimes.

"Some of these boda boda riders work with gangsters and organise crimes. We cannot risk allowing them to continue operating within the CBD."

Sonko has appointed an anti-mugging squad amid efforts to curb crime in the city centre.

Mbaya noted the ban on boda bodas will help congest the CBD, making passenger movement easier. He said the riders can take their passengers up to

Ngara, Globe roundabout,Uhuru Park and OTC.
