The NGO Council of Kenya wants Kiambu county to revoke a motion they passed last week to compel public and private companies

to employ 70 per cent of their staff from the local community.

The council on Sunday said the move does not observe nationalism and patriotism.

“While the idea might look good for the locals residents, it does not promote integration among Kenyans.” council chair Stephen Cheboi said in a statement.

The council argues that although the county wants to advocate for employment to locals, it has to look for alternatives ways of approaching the matter rather than making it a law.

The county assembly unanimously passed the motion by Majority leader Anthony Ikonya on December 15.

Section 65 (1)(e) states that in selecting candidates for appointment, the County Public Service Board shall consider the need to ensure that at least 30 per cent of the vacant posts at entry level are filled by candidates who are not from the dominant ethnic community in the county.

The NGOs council also raised a red flag in the number in the deaths reported in December alone as a result of road accidents.

They urged drivers to be cautious on the road.

“We urge the police to deal firmly with tragic law offenders as way of reducing road accidents. We call on urgent Measures to ensure our Major and busy roads are dual carriage” Cheboi added.

They also want the government to consider banning night travel and reduction of speed to 50km per hour by Public service Vehicles (PSV) vehicles during the festive season.
