NASA supporters jubilant as Supreme Court 'disciplines' IEBC

NASA supporters in various parts of the country are celebrating the Supreme Court ruling nullifying Uhuru Kenyatta's re-election.

Even before Chief Justice David Maraga finished reading the summary ruling on Friday, residents in Kisumu and Homa Bay were already shouting and screaming in joy.

Outside the Supreme Court, Opposition supporters also cheered on.

Four judges ruled in favour of NASA's petition that challenged the presidential election results.

The ruling has set a precedent both in Kenya and across the continent.

NASA leader Raila Odinga told journalists, "[It is a] historic day for the people of Kenya and by extension the people of Africa."

Kisumu deputy Governor Mathews Owili and former TNA secretary Onyango Oloo are among leaders seen celebrating with residents in Kisumu.

"It is a wise decision,we can now tell what actually took place in August 8 general elections," said Collince Ouma of Homa Bay town said.

In Kakamega town, traders and boda boda operators sang, danced and shouting NASA slogans.

Police officers manned the streets to ensure order was maintained, but business came to a standstill in most places.

'IEBC MUST BE DISCIPLINED'

Lurambi MP Titus Khamala joined NASA supporters in celebrations.

"I am so happy that justice has for the first time been served to Kenyans," he said.

The MP said the Supreme Court has proven that the judiciary in Africa needs to respect the will of the people and rule of law.

He said NASA will go back to the drawing board and strategise to ensure they retain support.

Butere MP Tindi Mwale noted that the judiciary has come of age and redeemed its image.

ANC's Job Mwamto said the court's verdict confirmed that Raila's claims of rigging were founded.

"IEBC must be disciplined and barred from conducting repeat elections," he added.

In Kisii, locals could not hide their joy at the seven-judge bench ruling.

Although it was only delivered in part, residents said they were buoyed that the Supreme Court recognised that the August 8 general elections were "shambolic".

"We are going to celebrate the whole night because of the informed by the Supreme Court Chief Justice David Maraga," one resident said.

They said the era of Kenya being ruled by two communities has come to an end.

"The ruling has made Kenya achieve true democracy, which Raila has been fighting for for many years," Mary Auma said.

'SOLOMONIC RULING'

Former Kisii county Speaker Kerosi Ondieki termed the ruling delivered by Maraga as Solomonic.

"He has given Kenyans the hope which they have been yearning for," he added.

But he noted that the dissenting judged should not be castigates as they have a right to their decisions.

Celebrations are also ongoing in parts of Nairobi that previously saw deadly protests when Uhuru was declared winner on August 11.
