ODM’s National Elections Board Sunday night cancelled its nominations in Kisumu County citing security reasons.

The elections which were scheduled to be conducted on Monday alongside the counties of Homabay, Siaya and Migori will now be held on Tuesday, April 25.

“The National Elections Board has assessed the security situation in Kisumu and observed that the planned primaries scheduled for tomorrow (Monday) April 24 in the County cannot proceed as scheduled,” communications director Philip Etale said in a statement.

The new date could however still be changed as Etale said the primaries would go on on Tuesday

“depending on the improvement of security situation”.

This comes even after the Kisumu County Commissioner Mohamed Maalim

had assured of enough security during the exercise.

Etale however affirmed that nominations in the neighbouring counties of

Homabay, Siaya and Migori would go on as scheduled.

The last minute cancellation did not go down well with some aspirants in Kisumu County.

Kisumu Governor seat aspirant Hezron Makobewa said it was unfortunate that the information was dispatched at the 11th hour.

"We expected formal communication from the office and not from the returning officer who had been missing the whole day," he said.

Kisumu County returning officer Tom Okong’o had reportedly informed them of the decision on Sunday night moments before the official statement was released.

the last minute cancellation would greatly inconvenience aspirants as they had already dispatched their agents to various polling stations in readiness for the primaries.

"The new development not only inconveniences all stakeholders but brings into question the rationale behind the last minute postponement,"

Makobewa

said.
