The Kenya Forest Service has denied reports of wanton destruction of the Aberdare and Mount Kenya forests by illegal loggers. KFS Nyeri Ecosystem conservator Muchiri Mathinji, however, said there is harvesting of mature trees in the forests. He said harvesting of mature trees is being confused with illegal logging. Mathinji spoke on Saturday in Kieni, Nyeri. He said KFS has engaged Community Forest Associations to stop illegal logging. “The implementation of the Forestry Act has reduced illegal activities in forest zones within the region,” Mathinji said.

He said KFS is educating residents on conservation.
