We want answers on athletes' trouble in Rio, Raila tells state

The government owes

athletes an explanation on why they had

to be exposed to shame and frustrations at the just concluded Rio Olympic games, Cord leader Raila Odinga has said.

"The government must get to the bottom of the shoddy preparations and scandals that dogged our team in Rio," Raila said in a statement on Monday.

He said the government must send a stern warning "that this is the last time #TeamKenya will ever be pulled down by ".

A Kenyan athletics coach John Anzrah was sent home from the games after he posed as an athlete and gave a urine sample in a doping test.

"That is the least we can do for these young men and women who use their talent to bring respect for our nation," Raila said.

He congratulated the athletes for their perseverance, hard work and commitment, adding, "We wish them continued success in the many sporting events which lie ahead,"

"They remain a source of inspiration for our other young people, and they give us the confidence that when we have the will, we can overcome any obstacle as a nation," Raila said.

He said Kenyans

are immensely proud of the athletes who brought honour to Kenya despite "shoddy team management and hostile climate".

The opposition leader remarks comes after president Uhuru Kenyatta

warned athletes federations of their doping actions.

While congratulating the performance of the country's team in Brazil, Uhuru said it was important to have a proper understanding of the institutional, policy and administrative failures.

"We will ensure that lessons are learnt, questions are answered, action is taken and full accountability achieved. Every Kenyan must take their responsibilities seriously and be ready to face the consequences of their actions," he said.
