Kenya airports not under imminent threat of al Shabaab - KAA

KAA has refuted claims of possible al Shabaab attacks on major airports saying an intelligence report was leaked prematurely.

Managing director Yatich Kangugo assured the public that all airstrips and airports were "not under any imminent threat".

"My office acted on first informant. Unfortunately the information was released without due verification by threat assessment experts,"

Kangugo said on Monday.

"Normal operations are ongoing. We are aware of the prevailing global terrorism threat and have raised our operational threat category to high alert."

In his address to the press at KAA offices, he urged the public to remain vigilant and inform law enforcement agencies of any suspicious activities.

An internal memo by the Kenya Airports Authority stated that it had in major airports following reports on Sunday evening of impending terror attacks.

Head of Security Eric Kiraithe

said in the memo on Friday that 11 militants who underwent training in Somalia could carry out attacks early in March. He could not be reached for comment on Monday.
