A police officer was on Thursday evening arrested by anti-graft officers for allegedly demanding a Sh2,000 bribe from a truck driver.

Constable David Kamau was arrested at Archers post roadblock in Samburu County after Ethics and Anti Corruption Authority officials laid an ambush.

The owner, James Mithika, had been asked to pay Sh3,000 for the release of his truck and driver, but negotiated the figure with the officer, EACC Upper Eastern acting deputy director Ignatius Wekesa said.

Mithika reported to the EACC officers and was given treated notes.

The suspect tried to tear the treated notes after he noticed the anti-graft officers, but mistakenly destroyed his untreated Sh1000 and Sh100 notes.

The treated money was not damaged, Wekesa said.

Investigations have commenced after which the police officer will be charged.
