Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has said Kenya will get approvals to start manufacturing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by Thursday.

This comes as Kenya on Wednesday confirmed 22 new cases of Covid-19.

This brings the number of cases to 81.

A total of 300 people were tested within the last 24 hours.

The new patients are as follows - 18 Kenyans, two Pakistanis and 2 Cameroonians.

Industrialisation PS Betty Maina last week said the government is working with the textile sector to start manufacturing PPE.

CS Kagwe said not every face mask passes the quality test and urged Kenyans to be careful when buying them.

There have been a string of business people who have come up with alternative face masks, following the global scarcity of N95 masks.

Some researchers advise N95 masks should be left for medical workers and that alternatives can be used.

However, there has been debate on the effectiveness of the alternatives, with some making masks out of African fabric and bandanas.
