All set as Sh10m Kakamega Governors Cup finals kick off

The winners for women in netball and volleyball will walk away with Sh500,000

More than 90 teams are set to battle it out in Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa Cup games.

The games which will kick off on Friday will be held in four different stations within the county.

The games which involve four games that is, football (men and women), netball, volleyball (men and women) and rugby will begin on December 29 with the finals being held on January 1, 2024.

“I welcome you all to the Governor’s bonanza 2023 edition whose finals will be held at the Bukhungu stadium. Our chief guest will be ODM party leader Raila Odinga among other guests,” Barasa said.

The competition began at the ward level after which they proceeded to compete at the Subcounty level and finally at the county level.

For the men soccer awards, the winner will be awarded Sh2 million, first runners up gets Sh1.5million, second runners up Sh1million and third runners up Sh500,000.

“The winners for women in netball and volleyball will walk away with Sh500,000 and the first runners up get Sh250,000. The final category that is women soccer will have their winner scoop Sh1million, first runners up Sh750,000, second runners up Sh500,000 and the third runners up will get Sh250,000,” he added.

The first round of 32 which entails men’s soccer will include teams that won at the Subcounty level and will be held on December 29, 2023.

Teams playing at Bukhungu Stadium are L Arsenal vs Sawawa FC, Machine vs Samba Boys, Cowboys FC vs Buchifi while Muhomo vs Milimani Lurambi, Sango rangers’ vs Malinya cranes, G Buffaloes vs Bushiri Bluestars will meet at Kakamega High Upper pitch.

“Butali Youth vs Soccer Best, Young Simba vs Sportiff Youth, Nambacha vs the Blades will battle it out at Kakamega High Mabao pitch while Condas vs Milimani Lugari, Nyota Academy vs Rovers, Mung’ang’a vs Hippos will be at Matende primary,” Mandela said.

Further, Shianda Rangers vs Manda, Matungu Blackstars vs Ilesi United, Milla FC vs Maroon FC and Matisi vs Green Boys will play at Kakamega High school pitch 3 and approved grounds respectively.

Eight teams will play netball finals at the Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology Courts 1, 2, 3 and 4 on December 30, 2023.

Teams that proceeded to the finals in the soccer women category are Lwandeti, Marukusi, Bukura Queens, Mulembe central, Lusumu queens, Bushiri combined, Kakoyi starlets and classic ladies.

Others are Ikolomani queens, Ingolomosio, Bafanabafana, Khwisero Township, Booker Queens, Central starlets, Kakamega starlets and Eshikufu Queens.

For the rounds of 16, volleyball men and women will have sixteen teams playing at MMUST, Kakamega High Court 1, 2 and 3.
