Teso South MP Mary Emase was forced to alight from her car to clear a road that had been barricaded by protesters at the Lukolis bridge along the Malaba-Busia road.

Emase, in a video seen by the Star, is seen alighting from her car alongside her aides and a few supporters to clear stones that had been used to block the road.

The road was barricaded by the anti-government protesters who are demanding the government to lower the high cost of living. The three-day demos that started on Wednesday was called by opposition leader Raila Odinga.

At the same time, one youth claimed to have taken part in the protests and blocking of the road was arrested and detained at Malaba police station.

The protesters also lit fire in the middle of the road with Emase condemning the act which she said has paralysed transport.

Emase, after unblocking the highway drove to a local police station where she is heard in the video complaining that the police were not doing their work of securing lives and people’s property.

The UDA lawmaker is heard telling a police officer at the station to explain to her if the officers in the area are in support of Azimio’s demonstrations.

“Are you part of those protesting? Aren’t you supposed to secure the government?” she laments.

The armed officer subsequently responds telling the MP that other officers were out containing demonstrators.

Emase, however, shoots back asking the police officer why demonstrators managed to block the busy Malaba-Busia highway if indeed his colleagues were out patrolling.

“We have come here driving but we have not seen any police officers on the road. I want to tell you to get out of your offices and go to the road,” Emase said.

“I don’t want to see a road whose construction I lobbied for being destroyed by protesters.”

The MP said peaceful demonstrations do not mean causing mayhem and destroying people’s property.

“I want to tell you the police to be on the watch and arrest anyone who will destroy another Kenyan’s property.”

Busia is among counties that have witnessed violent protests since Wednesday.
