Locals in Vihiga County have told the Senate Adhoc Committee investigating the Shakahola deaths to shut down the Goodnews International Church.

They say the government has delayed shutting down the church despite the horrific incident that has left over 200 people dead.

Deputy county commissioner for Vihiga Florence Sitawa said Churches constitution is the major reason why chaos erupts in churches.

"We should have these churches' constitution be relooked," she said.

The ad hoc committee led by the Vice Chair Senator Shakila Abdallah is in Vihiga County to meet families whose loved ones died at Shakahola Forest in Kilifi County.

The Committee was received by Governor Ottichilo and Senator Godfrey Osotsi.

Osotsi, in his remarks, said the government should be held responsible for the Shakahola incident.

"Where was the government when Paul Mackenzie was encouraging people to starve to death," Osotsi asked.

"People were dupped in this Mackenzie mess due to poverty and the government must seek a way of improving people's lives," he added.

Osotsi said if Kenya's economy deteriorates further, more Kenyans will continue to be dubbed by rogue preachers.

He noted that having laws governing the church was not a good idea, saying the churches have their own laws which should be respected and left in place.

"If we have regulations, they should be by the churches but not an Act of Parliament," he said.

Ottichilo, on the other hand, told the Senate ad hoc committee that churches within the county are the major sources of insecurity.

He said the wrangles within those churches have even led to deaths.

The Senate committee is currently investigating the proliferation of religious organizations and the circumstances leading to deaths.

The Committee has been in Malindi, Nairobi, Kisumu and currently in Vihiga county.
