UDP leader Cyrus Jirongo has said that he wants to become Kakamega governor to unite the Luhyas and prepare the community for national leadership.

He said ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi and his Fork Kenya counterpart Senator Moses Wetang'ula were unable to provide leadership to the community and auctioned it to Deputy President William Ruto.

Jirongo said that he had decided to push either  Mudavadi or Wetang'ula to succeed President Uhuru Kenyatta but the duo abandoned him.

The former Lugari MP said that he returned to active politics after realising only Kijana Wamalwa managed to unite the Luhya community.

“If Luhyas vote for DP Ruto next month they will be confirming that they don’t have leaders who are capable to be president,” he said.

He said he was not interested in his salary as a governor but in restoring the Luhya pride and demonstrating that the community can unite and lead the country.

He said that he was ready to donate his salary to the needy if elected governor.

He urged Luhyas to vote for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential candidate Raila Odinga so that the Luhyas can take over from him when his term ends.

He said Luhyas should vote for Raila because he is from a different tribe that has never occupied the presidential seat and this will help break the dominance of the two tribes in the country's leadership.

Jirongo is facing six other candidates in the race to succeed Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.

He pledged to prioritise the youths if he wins

“I am not interested in stealing county funds because I do business and I have my money,” he said.

He said that he will enroll all residents of Kakamega in the National Hospital Insurance Fund for them to access quality healthcare.
