Defence Cabinet secretary Eugene Wamalwa on Thursday appealed to political leaders in the country to cease hate speech at political rallies.

Speaking at the burial of Kapkoi Parish priest Father Xavier Francis Opondo, Wamalwa appealed to leaders to enhance national unity by preaching peace.

“All of us including politicians must mind our language by being careful with what we  say so that we can unite this country because that is what  the fathers of our nation fought for,” he said

"Let us speak peace, choose unity over division and be instruments of peace as Father Francis Opondo was," said the CS.

He assured Kenyans of security even as the country heads to polls on August 9.

“Security apparatus in this country is on high alert to ensure that we have a peaceful election. The full force of the law will be applied, those threatening others are hereby put on notice’’, he said.

Former Rift Valley regional coordinator George Natembeya who was also present mourned the late priest as a true servant of God whose leadership touched many people.

"We thank God Almighty for Father Opondo who lies before His throne today ready to be received in the celestial palace. With profound humility we thank his family for having allowed him to serve in the vineyard of the highest High, To God be all the glory’’, Natembeya eulogized.

Natembeya who resigned from his job to contest the Trans Nzoia governor seat prayed to God to give the family, friends and faithful of the Catholic Church the fortitude and strength to bear the loss of their great leader.

Kiminini member of parliament Chris Wamalwa, also present, opposed the IEBC's decision to do away with the Biometric Voter Registration and called on the Cabinet to intervene and resolve the matter.

The MP said a return to the old system of voter registration is tantamount to taking the country back on the path of vote-rigging.
