Vihiga is in the process of digitising operations at the health department to speed up service delivery.

The move will also end paper-based data collection that is more cumbersome to staff.

Governor Wilber Ottichilo said automating services will eliminate cases of missing files.

“Once we are digitised, our patients will not have issues with missing files within our hospitals, which has been a major challenge,” he said.

Ottichilo spoke during a health products and technology unit workshop at Sosa Cottage.

He said with the formation of the HPTU, strong health supply chains with visible, high-quality data will be available.

The data will be used to determine demand, plan procurement, monitor consumption trends, assess stock levels, decide on resupply quantities, prevent medicine expiry and monitor the capacity and performance of the entire supply chain.

Ottichilo praised partners who have helped Vihiga form an HPTU. The partners include USAID.

Monica Dea, Health Advisor at the United States Agency for International Development, said her team is committed to an efficient, effective and accountable supply chain for the achievement of universal health coverage.

“I promise to provide technical support to ensure that all counties have HPTU,” she said.

“This will, in turn, benefit end-users with the assurance of constant availability of quality health products and improved health outcomes.”

Dea said by automating and expediting the collection of data, improved visibility will be achieved, leading to better patient care by improving the availability of essential commodities.
