Bungoma Governor Wycliffe Wangamati has called on Mulembe leaders to take Luhya unity seriously, saying that continuous infighting hurts their chances of gaining power in 2022.

"As a community, we are yet to taste real power," he said.

Wangamati spoke in Emanyulia, Khwisero subcounty, in Kakamega county during the burial of Nathan Osore Sakwa.

He called on political supremos in the region to "mean business when they speak about Luhya unity", saying the region always splits the vote to the detriment of Luhya aspirations.

There are those who feel very good when we speak with many voices. t is  high time this came to an end and we used our numbers as a blessing and not a curse.

"Today, only 10 per cent of the national budget finds its way down to the counties while 90 per cent left at the national government benefits only a few counties from certain regions," he said.

"The only way we can rewrite the mathematics of development as a community is by uniting and fighting for a place at the high table of national leadership."

Wangamati said the lack of unity caused the region to lag behind in development, saying it was a high time the Mulembe nation spoke with one voice.

He said other communities take advantage of Luhya disunity to divide them adding that if the community united, others would be politically irrelevant.

“There are those who feel very good when we speak with many voices. It  is high time this came to an end and we used our numbers as a blessing and not a curse,”  Wangamati said.
