Primary and secondary schools in Kakamega county are continuing with holiday tuition, despite an existing ban.

A spot check revealed that most primary schools were conducting extra tuition for standard seven and eight students.

They charge between Sh300 and Sh500 for each pupil.

To avoid attention, the students are asked to go to school in civilian clothes.

Kakamega Central subcounty education officer Indiatsi Mabale yesterday denied that holiday tuition had been approved.

“I have even summoned and warned some schools against the practice because it is illegal,” he said.

Teachers found engaging in the practice will be dealt with in accordance with the law, Mabale said.

We also established that most secondary schools retained form three and four students for tuition after schools closed for the Aril holiday.

They have asked parents to pay between Sh2,000 and Sh6,000 for the same, disguised as motivation fees.

The money is paid into a different bank account from that used to pay school fees.
