A new board has been elected to take charge of the Kenya Seed Company.

Former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Wangui Ngirici is the new board chairperson, following elections by directors of the firm.

Ngirici has replaced Agricultural Development Corporation managing director Mohammed Bulle, who has been serving on an acting capacity.

Kenya Seed Company is the largest seed producer in the East African region and owns or leases large farms in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania for seed production.

"I'm happy for the honour bestowed on me by board members and pledge to work with all stakeholders for the benefit of farmers in our country and other regions we serve," Ngirici said.

She said the seed firm is a vital institution in helping to achieve President William Ruto's plan on food security in the country.

“Production of quality seeds is a key component of efforts to increase food production in the country. As a company, we will work with other relevant institutions to ensure we maintain high quality seeds,” Ngirici said.

Other new directors who were elected to join the board include Eliud Kipchirchir Tum, Job Ndemo and Bernard Wambwa.

The government recently made changes at the seed producer elevating Sammy Chepsiror to the managing director position. Chepsiror who succeeded Fred Oloibe has been a long serving staff at the company.

Chepsiror has extensive experience in the operations of the company and farmers in the Rift Valley have expressed confidence that he will lead the firm to greater success.

Oloibe was deployed back to the Ministry of Agriculture as adviser to Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi. Until his promotion, Chepsiror served as sales and marketing manager.

Kipchirchir before being picked as director, served as manager at Kibos in Tanzania which is a subsidiary of Kenya Seed Company. Wambwa was UDA's candidate for Saboti parliamentary seat.

Ngirici also pledged to ensure availability of adequate and high yielding seeds for local farmers. She said the company would strive to upscale production to boost the country's food security.

Chepsiror said with the new board in place Kenya Seed Company was focused to enhance its capacity and serve farmers in a better way by ensuring they access quality and adequate seeds for all crops grown in various parts of the country.
