Foreign Affairs CS Alfred Mutua planted 52 trees to signify his age during his birthday in his Ngali ranch on Sunday.
“In keeping with the advice by our President William Ruto, and as part of our campaign to roll back climate change,” said Mutua.
Mutua also said he is planting the trees in anticipation of the rains later in November.
“I have today planted 52 trees, symbolising my age, at my ranch in Ngali, Ikutha, South Kitui."
He said his plan is to plant a minimum of 5,000 trees on all his farms by the end of 2023.
The CS said it has been nearly three years since good rains fell in the region and people are suffering.
“The effects of climate change are being felt and I support our president’s plan and call for each of us to play a role,” Mutua said on his Facebook.
He said even though President Ruto has urged every Kenyan to plant about 300 trees each, he requested his colleagues in cabinet to take up the challenge to plant at least 3,000 trees each.
“All other elected and appointed leaders should plant 2,000 trees each in one year’s time. Let us please lead from the front,” he appealed.
“I have also taken time to sit along the newly planted trees, mostly mango trees and Nandi flame, to pray and thank God for my recent appointment,” Mutua said.
