Deputy President William Ruto savoured another win as UDA swept five parliamentary seats in Baringo — including that of his Rift  Valley rival, Senator Gideon Moi.

That made it extra-sweet.

Ruto had called for six-piece voting and asked what concretely Gideon had done for Baringo and how often he visited. The voters listened.

Baringo is Gideon's home turf, which he lost to former Baringo North MP William Cheptumo. Gideon and Ruto have been at odds, each wants to be the undisputed kingpin of the Rift Valley.

UDA swept five constituencies: Baringo North, Mogotio, Eldama-Ravine, Baringo Central and Baringo South, except for  the Tiaty-Kanu zone.

Incumbent Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandie retained his seat in a landslide of 25,055 votes against his independent opponent, Sammy Mwaita, who scored 9,515 votes. John Boiwo, the Kanu candidate, got 305 votes.

“I thank my people for trusting and reelecting me to serve them for a second term. I promise to do even more,” Kandie said on Thursday after receiving his certificate.

Mwaita, who is the former MP and Kandie's cousin, ignored DP Ruto’s call to step down after losing the UDA primaries in April. He earned 2,000 votes.

Former Baringo speaker David Kiplagat, who came second with 7,000 votes, however, heeded UDA helmsman Ruto and dropped his ambition.

Baringo South MP Charles Kamuren also retained his seat through UDA. He garnered 15,340 votes against competitors Dickson ole’ Keis (Jubilee) who scored 9,899 votes, Joseph Tarus (independent)  garnering 7,241 votes, Abraham Mengich (PDU) with 328 and Richard Moindi (Kanu) 265.

“I am so humbled to the people of Baringo South for reelecting me. I will put at the top of my priorities the issues of insecurity, education and infrastructure," Kamuren said.

He was boosted by major support from DP Ruto.
