- Turkana commissioner says 4,304 candidates are sitting their KCSE exam — 2,515 boys, 1,789 girls.
- Turkana East has suffered from serious insecurity in Kapedo, Lomelo, Kamuge and Napeitom caused by bandits, cattle rustlers and criminal gangs.
KCSE exam materials were on Monday airlifted to schools in Kapedo, Turkana East due to bad roads and insecurity.
Schools have been attacked in the past and now all have to be guarded 24-7.
"Ferrying examination materials using a helicopter will help to save time for candidates to start their examination on time," Turkana commissioner Wambua Muthama said on Monday.
For many years, the violence in Turkana East has claimed the lives of soldiers, police officers and civilians. It has also been in the spotlight because of attacks, cattle rustling and residents' displacement in Kapedo, Lomelo, Kamuge and Napeitom.
The latest deadly bandit attacks last month in February claimed the lives of a deputy inspector general of the GSU and other law enforcers.
The attack occurred at Ameyen, seven kilometres from Kapedo along the Chemolingot Road.
Wambua said 4,304 candidates are sitting the exam in Turkana — 2,515 boys and 1,789 girls. Turkana has 20 examination centres.
He added that 2,473 refugees in Kakuma camp are also sitting the exam, among them 1,884 boys and 589 girls. Six examination centres have been set up at the refugee camp in Kakuma.
He warned religion groups and churches to turn down the loud music that may interrupt the concentration of candidates until the exams are over.
