Naivasha High School was closed down indefinitely on Sunday evening after students went on a rampage, causing major property damage.

The students smashed windows and doors forcing anti-riot officers to intervene before they were ordered out of the institution.

Early this year, the Ministry of Education changed the school principal to quell the unrest. It was closed three times in November and December last year. Naivasha subcounty education officer Bernard Chirchir sad the closure was a sign of a deeper problem.

He said trouble started over the weekend after Form 3 students pledged they would not sit the exams that were to start on Monday.

“The students incited their colleagues and in the process some property was damaged before the board of management decided to close down the school,” he said.

Chirchir said police and education officials would investigate the arrest with a view to expelling students responsible for the crisis.

“The school was closed several times last year due to unrest and we changed the principals but the students have again turned unruly, meaning there is a deeper problem,” he said.

Last year, the Ministry of Education was forced to close secondary schools early due to increasing cases of unrest and arson in more than 50 schools.

Meanwhile, police in Naivasha are yet to identify body parts found dumped off the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.

The pieces of bones and bloodied clothes were found within Kedong area off the road a day after a trailer ferrying bitumen worth millions was carjacked under unclear circumstances.

The officers have collected samples for DNA testing after initial investigations indicated that the body parts belongs to the driver of a trailer, which was later found dumped in Naivasha.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru said that they had collected samples from the driver’s relatives to establish identity.

He said investigating officers had also arrested suspects who bought 147 drums containing the bitumen that was en route from Mombasa to Eldoret.

“We have made several arrests and it’s a matter for time before we recover the stolen cargo and get all those behind this incident,” he said.
