Ex-Kericho county officials released on bond in graft case

Two former senior officials at the Kericho county government who had been summoned by EACC officers have been released on a police bond.

The two were released on a Sh50,000 bond each until January 17 next year, when they will take plea.

They were arrested  on Wednesday in connection with misappropriation of public funds to a tune 0f Sh9.5 million.

An informer who sought anonymity said the two spent the night in police custody at Kericho police station where they recorded statements immediately after their arrest.

He said their fingerprints were taken in readiness for prosecution but they could not be arraigned because the Kericho Chief Magistrate who was to handle the is away on leave.

The magistrate is the only one at the law courts who handles corruption cases in Kericho and Bomet counties and its environs.

The two who were attached to the procurement department and tendering committee respectively are said to have allocated money without adherence to the procurement procedure.

The duo whose names were withheld until after they take plea before a court of law allegedly allocated Sh9.5 million to Chepcheliyot Water Pan in Chepseon.

Confirming the incident, South Rift Regional EACC boss, Ignatius Wekesa said his department was keen on ensuring similar cases are captured and prosecuted.

He reaffirmed EACC's commitment to fight graft and protect public funds.
