An MP from Narok County has accused Deputy President William Ruto of being insincere in his conservation efforts towards Mau forest.

Narok North MP Moitalel ole Kenta said the DP has always wanted the illegal settlers to stay in the forest and his change of tune now is personal and is trying to pursue his own agenda by using the community.

Speaking while distributing cheques worth Sh42 million for school infrastructure at Olorupa Primary School in Narok North constituency, Kenta said that only President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga should be lauded for championing conservation efforts for Mau forest.

“It is quite ironic for DP to claim that he supports the restoring of Mau forest and yet when the illegal settlers were removed from the forest, he was the one who was behind the putting of camps for these evictees. He should know that we are clever and we know what is going on,” said Kenta.

The ODM legislator said that the Maasai community will support ODM leader Raila Odinga for presidency having stood with the community during the evictions.

“Raila was fought left, right and centre because of Mau forest by the DP  and that led to losing the presidency in 2013 and we will continue to support him until he achieves his dream for this country,” he said.

The sentiments come at a time when DP Ruto toured Narok North constituency on Friday and assured locals that no evictee will return to the forest if he is elected the president of this country in the next year’s polls.

While attending a prayer meeting at Covenant Church International at Osasimwa, Ruto said the Mau issue is a done deal and warned his opponents to look for another agenda as already the state has put measures toward conserving the biggest water tower.

At the same time, Kenta has dismissed the assertion that the Maasai community is supporting the DP for the presidency.

Kenta said the community is fully and solidly behind President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga claiming that those spreading rumours on UDA popularity in Narok have missed the point.

The Narok North leader accused the DP of being dishonest and the community will not trust him because he betrayed them during his tenure as deputy president.

The lawmaker said that as leaders, they need to be honest and tell the truth to the people on development matters.

“We are supporting President Kenyatta and Raila Odinga for their handshake move which led to uniting people across the country,” said Kenta.

He also said that the community will support Raila for presidency saying he has always stood with the community whenever they face challenges.
