Turkana will vaccinate and treat 60,000 livestock, including camels, goats and sheep.

The programme will be carried out in Turkana West, Turkana East, Turkana Central, Loima and Turkana West.

Agriculture executive Philip Aemun said on Friday the department is committed to vaccinating and treating all livestock countywide.

He was witnessing the treatment of camels at Kakong’u in Turkana South.

The livestock intervention is being jointly undertaken under a public-private partnership model. It involves the county veterinary services directorate, Livestock Market Systems and  Sayuni Agro-Vet.

Aemun has urged  heads of kraals to present their livestock for vaccination and treatment at designated areas to ensure all animals are reached.

Sheep, goats and camels will be vaccinated against Loukoi, or contagious caprine pleuropneumonia.

More than 60 camels were also dewormed and treated against trypanosomiasis [sleeping sickness in humans]at Locher-Esekon village in Kakong'u. Remaining livestock will be treated.

Aemun said treatment has a low cost compared with high impact, which is easily sustainable.
