A middle-aged man died on Tuesday morning after a quarry where he was harvesting sand collapsed and buried him in Ndabibi area of Naivasha.

His colleague managed to escape as residents moved in to try to rescue the man. He was confirmed dead on arrival at a nearby health centre.

This brings to two the number of men who have been killed in quarries in Naivasha in the last one week.

Over the weekend, another man lost his life in Mai Mahiu area after a quarry in which he was harvesting sand caved in. Six others were injured.

A witness Amos Mworia said the deceased had been working in the quarry for over a year.

“This is an unfortunate incident and area residents did all they could to rescue him but he passed on before he could arrive in hospital,” Mworia said.

Meanwhile, scores of motorists escaped death narrowly after a trailer lost control along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway, ramming into eight vehicles.

Six people were injured, three of them seriously during the Monday evening incident near Raini trading centre, some 10km from Naivasha town.

The incident occurred near the scene in Karai where over 40 people died in 2016 after a lorry ferrying inflammables rammed into ten vehicles before bursting into fire.

In the latest incident, the trailer that was destined for Western Kenya developed mechanical problems while going downhill leaving a trail of destruction and pain.

According to James Kabono from Naivasha Road Safety Group, due to the high traffic on the road at the time, the trailer's driver rammed into eight of the vehicles.

He noted that this was not the first time that heavy trucks had lost control and caused fatal accidents on that section of the road.

“We are wondering what the trailer was doing on this section of the road as it’s supposed to use the Limuru-Mai Mahiu road. But we are grateful no one lost their lives,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed both incidents, adding that the body from the quarry had been taken to the local mortuary while the wreckage from the accident had been towed to the area police station.
