Five people have died after they are suspected to have drank poisoned chang'aa while another is admitted at the Bahati Sub-County Hospital unconscious.

They allegedly drank spiked illicit brew at a drinking den in JC area of Kabatini location, Nakuru North subcounty, on Monday evening.

Residents said the sixth person who is in critical condition started complaining of stomach pains before blacking out.

Nakuru Police Commander Beatrice Kiraguri on Tuesday said it was not clear what the four had taken because their bodies were found at different points.

Four bodies were collected in the open fields and paths while the fifth person succumbed while undergoing treatment at the Bahati hospital.

Kiraguri said it was not clear what the victims may have consumed because no one was willing to offer information.

"Even the survivor cannot say what exactly they consumed... it is the area leader who has said that they were suspected to have taken spiked chang'aa," she said.

She observed that they could have taken food or the said drink.

Kiraguri said samples had been taken from the victims and the survivor to ascertain the actual cause of death.

“There is speculation the chang’aa was poisoned by a competitor who has been accusing his rival of stealing his stock but we are treating that as hearsay until we have people who can testify and evidence to prove it,” she said.

The bodies have been taken to Bahati Subcounty Hospital mortuary.
