Residents of Turkana and the region will soon access quick Covid-19 testing.

The national government wants to ensure the county has a PCR testing centre.

The county will also have a blood donation and storage system to ensure residents access to blood without inconvenience, especially during emergencies.

“We are going to support Turkana to become a PCR testing centre. We will also start supporting them to manage blood acquisition, storage and other important areas,” Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.

“This will ensure the people do not suffer because of distances while in need of blood or Covid-19 testing and other tests in the future.”

Kagwe said Kenya is committed to working with regional organisations such as the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (Igad) and the international community to provide healthcare.

On Wednesday, Igad donated an ambulance to Turkana  to help the eight members states combat Covid-19.

The ambulance from the European Union is in addition to two other ambulances donated to Mandera and Wajir counties.

Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok said the ambulance will help with referrals of patients within the expansive county.

“We have 17 ambulances, this is going to ease referral system from Levels 4 to 6 and from Turkana to Eldoret and Nairobi where we have had difficulties reaching," he said.

It is not only going to help the Turkana residents  but also the refugee population of about 200,000.

Turkana which borders Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia has implemented the One Health Programme with the Karamoja area of Uganda.

This has benefited communities in very remote areas.

The EU allocated more than Sh79 billion (€60 million) to tackle health and socio-economic impacts of the Covid-19.

Igad executive secretary Workneh Gebeyehu said the ambulance will ease the impact of Covid-19 in Turkana and the region.

It is part of the Team Europe Global Response to support partner countries fighting the pandemic.

The project focuses on vulnerable groups, including migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons and cross-border communities.

It includes more than Sh1.67 billion (€13 million).
