The death toll from the landslide in Pokot South, West Pokot county, has risen to 36.

Speaking to Star on Saturday, the county commissioner confirmed the bodies were being retrieved from Narukurieng village.

He said many villages in West and East Pokot are affected by the mudslides.

Governor John Lonyangapuo on Saturday appealed for deployment of helicopters to help rescue stranded people.

Seven bridges were cut off along the Kitale-Lodwar route.

West Pokot county commander Jackson Tumwet said that people living in the area have been asked to move to safe places as there are high chances of more landslides occurring in the area.
