Two MPs from Turkana have lashed out at Red Cross following its appeal for Sh800 million to help mitigate the effects of drought.

They are Ali Lokiru (Turkana East) and James Lomenen (Turkana South).

Lokiru urged Kenyans and other well-wishers to desist from sending contributions through the organisation's pay bill number.

Lokiru said Red Cross should fully account for the Sh1 billion collected in 2018 to respond to the drought.

Red Cross secretary general Abbas Gullet appeared before a parliamentary committee on Tuesday and was told his account of how the funds were used was too generalised.

Lokiru said, "The National and county governments have already intervened to the situation of hunger which has endangered lives and livestock. The Cabinet Secretary for Devolution Eugene Wamalwa said there is a surplus of food in the country but the problem is how to distribute it to reach affected victims."

Lomenen said, "We accept Turkana has been hard hit by drought which has caused our people to starve. We appreciate the relevant interventions made by county and national governments."

"If anyone is serious and wants to help Turkana people he/she should not solicit money from Kenyans. Let them come through the Turkana county and the national government."
