An Elgeyo Marakwet MCA yesterday urged the IEBC to extend voter registration in the violence-prone Kerio Valley.
Kapyego MCA Benson Kiptire said residents fled to avoid the violence between the Marakwet and Pokot.
The month-long registration ended yesterday. The IEBC has said it will not extend the deadline.
Kiptire accused the National Registration Bureau of delaying the issuance of ID cards.
“I have 400 youths in my ward who applied for IDs when the mass voter registration started and they have not received them to date. These youths will not be able to vote because of the National Registration Bureau’s mistakes,” he said.
Kiptire was speaking in Iten. Last Friday three foreign athletes were arrested after they attempted to apply for national IDs using forged documents in Chepkorio, Keiyo South.
Rwandans Hakizimana Gervaiz and Hagenimana Olivier allegedly attempted to change their names to Geoffrey Kigen and Peter Kipkemboi using fraudulently obtained primary school-leaving certificates.
Burundian athlete Mpundu Elonge was arrested with the Rwandans’ forged documents.
Keiyo South deputy county commissioner Esther Mwamure said the suspects were arrested as they filled application forms at the registrar of persons’ offices.
She said the officer grew suspicious as the three could not speak in the local language.
“We have arrested the person who assisted them acquire the school-leaving certificates,” Mwamure said. She said they had genuine travel papers.
