Nandi Governor Cleosphas Lagat and Senator Stephen Sang’s rivalry intensified yesterday as Sang accused the governor of underperformance.

Sang also criticised Commission on Revenue Allocation chairman Micah Cheserem for defending Lagat’s record.

Cheserem visited the county on Monday. He said more than Sh12.5 billion allocation in the last three years had been well utilised.

But Sang said the CRA boss was not informed of the shortage of drugs at the Kapsabet County Referral Hospital and the startling resource waste.

“The CRA chairman should not be used by the governor to paint a wrong picture of what has been happening. Residents are well aware the county has been a failure,” he said.

“When the county paints an old water pump and claims it’s newly completed, it shows the governor and his team are desperate.”

The senator has declared he will run for governor. He held a series meetings with residents to popularise his candidacy.

Last week, Sang held more than 12 political forums in which residents urged him on.

“I’m consulting with residents so we know how to move forward with regard to next year’s elections,” he said.

Lagat enjoys the advantage of incumbency. In 2013, he won by a landslide on a URP ticket. He ran against Kanu candidate Judah Bett.

His supporters say he has initiated many development projects. However, his critics point to what he has failed to do.

“I am focused on delivering my mandate. Residents will decide well when the time comes,” the governor said in March.
