Nandi county commissioner Lucy Mulili as asked land owners to collect the more than 4,000 title deeds lying at the Lands offices.

Mulili said she is disappointed that the farm owners have let down the government. So far, 70,000 titles have been prepared and released to owners, she said. The documents would enable the landowners secure loans and develop them.

She spoke at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Kapsabet during Madaraka Day celebrations. The county commissioner said acquiring titles reduces land disputes.

“All that is required is for the owners to pay the government duty of Sh3,800,” Mulili said. She urged residents in areas prone to land slides to move. Mulili said the Kenya Forest Service and Nema will ensure residents stop encroachment. “Human activities along the escapement are to blame for the frequent landslides on the Nandi-Kakamega boundary,” she said. Mulili was referring to the death of five family members buried alive at Chepng’abai in Nandi North subcounty following a landslide. The woman and her four children were buried yesterday at a ceremony attended by Governor Cleophas Lagat and Mulili.
